Why Most Giveaways Fail to Generate Long-Term Customers

A giveaway wraps up. The entry count looks great, and the team calls it a win. Then three months pass, and none of it shows up anywhere that matters. No bump in repeat purchases. No real growth in the customer list. Just a folder of names nobody opens again.

This happens a lot. Giveaways are easy to run and easy to measure right after launch. Entries are visible, they’re easy to count, and they look great on a recap slide. But entries are not customers. Treating them like the same thing is the root of the problem. The mistakes that cause it aren’t new, either. The same few show up in giveaway after giveaway, and most of them have a straightforward fix once a brand knows to look.

The Prize Attracted the Wrong Crowd

The most common mistake starts before the contest even launches: the prize itself.

A gift card, cash, or a popular gadget with no real link to the brand pulls in a huge crowd. It also pulls in people who have zero interest in what the brand actually sells. These are the accounts that follow every giveaway on their feed, enter dozens a week, and unfollow the moment the winner is picked. Lots of entries, very little interest, and almost no chance any of them become a paying customer.

A prize tied to the product does the opposite. Fewer entries, sure, but the people who show up already care about the category. They’re not there for a free gadget. They’re there because they actually want what the brand makes.

Picking a Prize on Purpose, Not by Habit

This is a tradeoff brands need to make on purpose instead of stumbling into. A big generic prize will always win on raw entry numbers. A relevant prize wins on the number that actually matters six months down the line: how many entrants turn into customers.

Entry Mechanics Never Asked for Anything Useful

Plenty of giveaways ask for the bare minimum. An email address, maybe a follow, maybe a tag. That’s fast for the entrant, but it leaves the brand with almost nothing to work with once the contest is over.

Now compare that to an entry form with a short preference question, a product pick, or a quick quiz. Same effort from the entrant, but now the brand actually learns something. Which product they like. What problem they’re trying to solve. What kind of message might land with them later.

Without that extra layer, every entrant looks identical on paper. A brand has nothing to personalize a follow-up with, so everyone ends up getting the same generic email. Generic emails get generic results.

The One Question Most Forms Skip

A lot of teams drop this question from the form on the assumption that any extra step costs entries. That assumption rarely holds up. One short question barely moves the total number, and the payoff down the line outweighs whatever small dip it might cause on launch day. A brand that asks nothing upfront ends up guessing at everything downstream. A brand that asks one good question skips the guessing entirely.

This has to be fixed at the entry form, not after the fact. Once the contest closes, there’s no way to go back and ask people questions they were never asked to begin with.

The Follow-Up That Never Got Built

This mistake shows up more than any other, and it’s rarely about effort. It’s about where that effort went.

Almost all the planning time on a giveaway goes toward the launch. The creative, the prize, the entry flow, getting the page live. The period after the winner is announced usually gets one “thanks for entering” email and nothing else. Not because anyone decided that on purpose, but because the team is tired, the budget’s gone, and announcing the winner gets treated as the finish line.

But the interest a contest builds doesn’t disappear the day the winner is picked. People who entered are still paying attention right after that announcement. That’s exactly the moment a brand needs a real follow-up plan, and it’s exactly the moment most brands leave empty.

A giveaway with no post-contest plan isn’t really a customer acquisition campaign. It’s a short spike in attention with nothing built to hold onto it.

Everyone Got Treated the Same Way

A flat list of entrants isn’t really an asset yet. It only becomes one once it’s split apart by how each person engaged.

The winner deserves a different message than someone who only submitted an email and did nothing else. Someone who answered a product quiz deserves different follow-up than someone who spent ten seconds on the page. And any existing customers who happened to enter shouldn’t get pushed into a generic “welcome to the brand” series they don’t need.

Skipping this step means every entrant gets the exact same email no matter how engaged they were. That makes a genuinely interested entrant feel like just another name on a list, and it wastes whatever signal the entry form managed to collect.

The Follow-Up Was One Email, Not a Real Sequence

Even brands that do send something after the contest often send just one message, usually the same day the winner is announced. That single email tries to do everything at once. Thank people, promote a product, ask for a follow, and push a sale, all in one shot.

What a Real Sequence Looks Like

A real sequence starts somewhere, builds, and ends somewhere else. The opening message tells people who won, thanks everyone for showing up, and leaves them with a reason to stick around. A second message goes out a few days later with something for everyone who didn’t win, usually a small offer that rewards them without asking for a full purchase. Only after that does the sequence move into an actual product message, ideally tied to whatever the entrant showed interest in during the contest.

Cramming all of that into one email doesn’t just weaken the message. It burns through the best window a brand has to keep the conversation going, since entrants are only paying close attention for a short stretch right around the announcement.

Retargeting Stopped at the Entry List

A lot of brands treat the entrant list as the whole audience worth retargeting, which leaves a big chunk of interested traffic completely untouched.

Anyone who landed on the entry page and left without finishing is a warmer prospect than cold traffic, even if they never actually entered. So is anyone who clicked in from an ad but bounced off the landing page. None of that traffic shows up in the entrant list, but all of it saw the brand and showed some interest.

The other common mistake is running the same ad creative for weeks after the contest ends. Entrants have already sat through a lot of the brand’s messaging in a short window, so that creative goes stale fast. Once the contest wraps, the ad message should pivot toward an actual product or offer instead of repeating a pitch people have already seen.

Lookalike Audiences Get Skipped Too

There’s a second retargeting mistake that’s easy to miss because it doesn’t involve the entrant list at all. A well-run contest produces a useful seed audience for lookalike targeting on paid social, and a lot of brands never build one. The entrants who converted into customers, not just anyone who entered, make the strongest seed group. Skipping this step means the brand only ever markets back to people it already reached, instead of using the contest to find new prospects who look like the ones who actually stuck around.

User-Generated Content Went Straight Into a Folder

If the contest asked people to submit photos, videos, or captions, that content is usually the most wasted asset from the whole campaign.

Real customer photos make better social proof than studio shots most people don’t fully trust anymore. UGC often performs better than polished brand creative in paid social. A recap post brings back people who didn’t enter this time but might next time. None of that happens if the submissions just sit in a folder after the winner is picked.

The other piece brands miss is permissions. Reposting UGC on social and running it in paid ads usually need different levels of rights, and that has to be checked against the official contest rules before any of it goes back out. Skip that check, and content that could have been an asset turns into a legal headache instead.

The Data Never Made It Into the CRM

Even a contest with good segmentation and a solid follow-up plan can still fail long-term if the data dies with the campaign. Contest data sitting in its own spreadsheet, cut off from the brand’s real CRM and lifecycle marketing, is only useful for as long as that one email sequence runs.

Tagging contacts by entry source lets a brand compare contest-driven leads against other channels later on. What matters is how many entrants become paying customers, not how many opened an email. Get quiz answers and preferences into the brand’s personalization work, and a contest stops being a one-off and starts paying off long after it ends.

Nobody Defined What Success Meant Before Launch

The last mistake is the quietest one, and it’s why so many giveaways get called a win when they really weren’t. If a brand only decides what success looks like after the campaign wraps, entry count becomes the default measure, since it’s the easiest number sitting right there.

Setting a thirty- and sixty-day checkpoint before the contest even launches changes that. A target open rate for the follow-up emails. A conversion goal for the retargeted audience. Several UGC pieces cleared for reuse. Picking those numbers ahead of time is what forces a team to actually check back in two months later, instead of letting the whole campaign’s success rest on how big the entry count looked on day one.

Measuring the Right Numbers

Part of why entry count sticks around as the default metric is that it’s the only number that exists the moment the contest closes. Email engagement by segment, retargeting conversion, repeat purchases among entrants, and cleared UGC all take weeks to show up, and by then attention has usually moved to the next campaign.

That’s a reporting problem more than a results problem. A brand that builds a short checklist ahead of time, reviewed at thirty days and again at sixty, gets to see the real outcome instead of guessing at it.

Did entrants from the relevant-prize group convert at a better rate than the ones chasing a generic prize? Did the segmented sequence outperform a single blast email? Those answers only exist if someone bothers to check, and checking only happens when it’s built into the plan from the start rather than left for whoever remembers later.

Fixing the Pattern

None of these mistakes are really about the entry phase. That part usually works fine. Brands are good at getting people to enter something when there’s a decent prize attached.

Where things fall apart is everything the entry phase was supposed to set up. A prize that attracts the right people. An entry form that collects something useful. A segmented list. A real follow-up sequence with an actual arc. Retargeting that reaches past the entrant list. A plan for the content people submitted. And a way to feed all of it into the CRM so it doesn’t disappear the moment the campaign ends.

A giveaway that skips all of this can still hit its entry goal and still fail at the one thing that actually matters: turning a stranger’s five seconds of attention into someone who sticks around. The entry count was never the finish line. It was just the point where the real work was supposed to start.

How to Accelerate Your Pipeline

Accelerating Your Sales Pipeline

Imagine having a crystal ball that can predict which prospects are most likely to become customers and when. That’s the power of a sales pipeline – a visual roadmap to guide your sales team toward success. This is the foundation for understanding how to address the pipeline and how you can expedite certain parts once you understand the process.

A sales pipeline is a visual representation of the stages that a prospect goes through as they move through the sales process, much like the customer journey. It is a systematic approach to selling, where each stage of the pipeline represents a different step in the process of converting a prospect into a customer. Typically, a sales pipeline is divided into several stages, including lead generation, lead qualification, prospecting, presentation, negotiation, and closing. As a prospect moves through each stage, they become more qualified and engaged, and the likelihood of them becoming a customer increases.

Sales pipelines can be used to help sales teams manage their leads, forecast revenue, and identify areas for improvement in the sales process. By tracking the progress of each lead through the pipeline, sales teams can identify bottlenecks and areas of opportunity, and adjust their strategy accordingly.

Accelerating your pipeline refers to increasing the speed at which leads move through your sales funnel. By doing this, your sales pipeline can have a significant impact on your business, increasing revenue, improving customer satisfaction, and boosting overall efficiency. By shortening the time it takes to convert leads into customers, you can increase the number of deals closed and generate more revenue in a shorter amount of time. This not only benefits your bottom line but also improves your team’s morale and motivation. Additionally, a streamlined sales pipeline can lead to better customer experiences, as prospects receive quicker responses and more personalized attention. Finally, by identifying areas of inefficiency and continuously optimizing your sales process, you can improve your team’s productivity, reduce costs, and ensure sustainable long-term growth for your business.

Here are five ways to accelerate your pipeline:

  1. Qualify leads effectively: Develop a clear and effective lead qualification process to quickly identify the most promising leads. Here are three specific ways to qualify your leads:
    1. Use a lead scoring system: A lead scoring system allows you to assign points to each lead based on factors such as their level of engagement, budget, job title, and company size. By prioritizing leads with higher scores, you can focus your efforts on those with the greatest potential for conversion.
    2. Conduct thorough research: Before reaching out to a lead, conduct thorough research to understand their needs, pain points, and goals. This will allow you to tailor your approach and messaging to their specific needs, increasing the likelihood of a successful conversion.
    3. Ask qualifying questions: When engaging with a lead, ask open-ended questions that allow you to gather information about their needs, budget, timeline, and decision-making process. This will help you determine whether the lead is a good fit for your product or service and allow you to tailor your pitch accordingly.
  2. Nurture leads with relevant content: Create targeted and personalized content that addresses the needs and pain points of your leads. Use email marketing, social media, and other channels to deliver this content and keep leads engaged with your brand.
    1. Personalized communication: Tailor your communication to the specific needs and interests of the lead. Use their name, reference previous conversations, and highlight how your product or service can address their specific pain points.
    2. Provide valuable content: Share educational content that is relevant to the lead’s interests and stage in the buyer’s journey. This can include blog posts, whitepapers, case studies, and webinars. By providing value upfront, you can build trust and establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry.
    3. Offer a free trial or demo: Depending on your product or service, offering a free trial or demo can be an effective way to move a lead closer to a purchase decision. By providing hands-on experience with your offering, you can demonstrate its value and address any concerns or objections the lead may have.
  3. Automate tasks and processes: Use marketing automation tools to streamline tasks and processes, such as lead nurturing, scoring, and follow-up. This can help reduce the time and effort required to move leads through the funnel.
  4. Use sales acceleration technology: Implement sales acceleration technology, such as predictive analytics and AI-powered lead scoring, to identify high-value leads and prioritize them for your sales team.
  5. Optimize your sales process: Continuously analyze your sales process to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement. Use data and analytics to understand how leads are moving through the funnel and make adjust to accelerate their progression.

By implementing these strategies, you can accelerate your pipeline and convert more leads into customers in less time, giving you a healthier bottom line with a map for success.

10 Marketing Conference Promotions that Deliver Attendance

People remember 80% of what they hear, read, watch, and experience. Beyond that, 88% of consumers say a brand’s marketing approach has convinced them to buy. Our attention has always been limited, valuable, and scarce. But what distinguishes the present day is that technological advances have made an overwhelming amount of information available, strategically aimed at capturing our attention; this is a double-edged sword. As for the general public, it has never been easier to garner such personal levels of attention but for your targeted marketer audience, they are on their feet and see through simple ploys.  Let us show you how to get through to the influencing audience.

#1 Social Media is Your FRIEND

So go beyond creating infographics, testimonials, contests, advertising, and hashtags to post on your social media channels. When we go on the internet, we typically have a goal in mind, like finding a conference. Once we obtain what we want about the upcoming venue, we typically leave the site. However, social media keeps us on the platform longer and wanting more. Once we see a platform, event, or user we like, we “subscribe” to them on YouTube, “become friends” with them on Facebook, or “follow” them on Instagram or Twitter. Thereafter, anything that entity posts will appear on our feeds as well. Anyone can set up an account and have the opportunity for their marketing conference to be seen by millions through millions on social media.

#2 An Upscale, Unusual & Intriguing Web Site

While event goers will not find you based on design, it will contribute to your user experience and combined with a valuable brand and SEO, this will land conversion. An intriguing event website is one that is designed to capture the attention of people who are seeking valuable educational opportunities.  The use of motion graphics, nobs, and levers that personalize the experience will further engage and provide the social proof to earn you that conversion.

Think about what you want to say to each persona you have identified. Create a consistent message on your web page how you want to sell your event to them. Start to segment your audience according to the different types of stakeholders you have identified. By doing this, you can then begin to personalize your communications through other means.

#3  Influencer Speakers Speak for Themselves

Once you decide what type of conference you want to host, consider how much you need to invest in order to make it successful. Promote your event through influencers to speak at your event. Influencer marketing is a powerful way to generate buzz and interest in your marketing conference. Invite local businesses to sponsor your event because local businesses are often willing to support events hosted by their peers.

People buy from people – and people with a story resonate. Search your industry for influencers with stories as this is what people crave. They want a brand with a story, mission, and personality.  Go find yours and you’re on your way to, “getting yours”.

#4 Offer Early Registration at a Discounted Price – Countdown Clock

Early bird registration is a period when people can sign up for your next marketing conference before ticket prices go up. It sometimes launches during a current live event or shortly after. Consider tapping into that fear of missing out by adding a countdown on your registration form indicating how many more days, hours and minutes are left to get the discount. Scarcity is especially powerful. So, similarly, offer a limited number of tickets to your event. People will place a higher value on something when they’re in limited supply. Offer a VIP experience or other perks to entice people to buy now and really capture multiple client segment data.

#5 Email Marketing

Email marketing is an effective and economical approach to promote your marketing conference. But you must avoid transmitting standard, one-size-fits-all, email messages. As a substitute, opt for a more tailored methodology. Eighty percent of individuals say they’re more likely to make a purchase if they get a customized feel. Increase your conversion rates by segmenting your database to recognize people who have shared marketing responsibility interests by job title; communications, demand generation, PR, analytics, etc.  Now your message lands softly with people seeking more information on making their job more successful with the proper advanced information you can provide from experts in the industry.

# 6 Host Online Before – In Person Always

Hosting an online webinar is one of the best ways to generate leads and build relationships with your audience before you meet them at the marketing conference. Hosting a successful webinar doesn’t have to be expensive or timely. But if you’re looking to host a webinar that will help your next marketing conference grow, choose a topic that will appeal to your audience. You’ll need to consider what topics your audience would find interesting and relevant. If you are marketing for the automotive industry, surely floral arrangements would not be the best marketing advice to this group. Talk cars to bring people to the cars.

#7 Make The Press do The Work for YOU

Press releases are an important tool for businesses looking to gain exposure online. They’re also a great way to build relationships with journalists and bloggers. Press releases are a powerful way to promote your next marketing conference. However, if you don’t write one correctly, it could be a waste of time and effort… You need to choose a targeted audience when writing a press release. This means choosing a group of people looking to attend a marketing conference. If you write a press release targeting everyone, no one might read it due to it landing in unrelated publications.

# 8 Hire Professionals

Hiring an agency to help you with your next marketing conference can certainly make a difference. Event planners can save time and stress by hiring everyone you haven’t thought of for the conference. Trust us, these people will be needed from start to finish. If your budget and time allow, use the experience of a specialist to lead (and execute) the undertakings of your conference. Sometimes unfamiliarity of a city can throw the entire marketing conference askew. Locals will help.

# 9 Host a Happy Hour the Night Before

Happy hours are a great way to network with people who might become future clients. If you chat the night before, loosening up with a glass of vino and an appetizer will definitely make tomorrow more comfortable for all. Just remember to set boundaries regarding alcohol intake by you, your coworkers, and your guests. Set a time limit and a monetary amount so things stay professional.

# 10 The More The Merrier

Going back to #1 and Social Media, Influencers can be beneficial for many products. When running a future marketing conference, think about the “big names” in the business. Obtaining Seth Godin for your marketing conference might be a longshot but look back to all the networking you and your group have been doing naturally all your lives. Reach out to the talent pool you already have. And if you can pull off a celebrity, or a well-known person to your cause, that will be paramount to reaching high volume attendee numbers!

Overall, follow what promotional strategies work greatest as you work to achieve high attendance at your next marketing conference. Then, adjust your methodology established on your understanding of the past events. Using others, as well as pre-planning through your website, blogs, podcasts, and offers will all create the buzz to bring the crowds to life in real time!

Tech That Makes Marketing Easier

The job of the marketing and advertising executive has managed to become exponentially more complicated from the days before the internet.  We used to rely solely on ad agencies with special tools and expensive access to data — now all of these have been made available in-app format because the internet has made it possible.

Changing from big business access to direct access opens you to hours in the day you never had to begin with.  And now the tools available for any specific set of needs tend to be stacked with competition, necessitating the time to evaluate the tools in any specific category.

In an effort to minimize the time needed to review such tools, we have rounded up some of our favorites and will continue to add to the list to help marketers like you save time when trying to simplify and grow their business.

Sales Tools

Panda Doc enables you to send a detailed proposal with multiple pages and imagery as well as video to your prospect and the agreement in itself acts as a sales tool to reinforce why they want to do business with you – it sells them all the way to the signature line, where you can sign right there without needing additional signature software.

Hubspot is a great sales tool that is free to use to collect inbound lead data. Simply create lead magnets which can be an e-book, infographic, original research or content of any value.  Now you advertise these lead magnets on social and ad words and you will find your database growing. Hubspot will also show you how many times each prospect has engaged with your content or visited your website and where they came from – pretty cool for free.

Hybrid meeting production has taken a whole new meaning in the last couple of years. You can zoom for simple meetings, but if you are looking to take technology to the next level, you will want to involve professionals.  Take for example needing to pivot the NFL draft from in person to virtual in less than two weeks.  Some production needs are greater than an app when you’re wanting to impress. Think CES Tradeshow and large sales opportunities.  This is where your hybrid excellence can make the difference between the multi-million dollar deal and falling flat with Zoom. From content creation, talent acquisition, motion graphics, scriptwriting, broadcast technology, audience engagement tools, and more, Van Wagner produces the best hybrid events around, including the 2021 NFL Draft (hybrid production).

Customer Service Tools

Experiential Marketing: Your Guide to Extreme Engagement

Experiential marketing is one of the most engaging marketing practices available. This type of marketing completely immerses your customer with your brand by having full experiences with your brand; you are engaging most of their senses with your product or service. What more could you want that to have fully immersive experiences with your consumer.

Some people classify experiential marketing as PR stunts; we don’t really care what the bystander critics say as long as the consumer experience has them talking. And this is exactly what experiential marketing does – gets your audience talking about the experience and lends itself to viral marketing.  And don’t let the name fool you – experiential marketing is not new; have you taken the Pepsi Challenge in the 80s? If so, you have enjoyed the effects of experiential marketing.  And if you recall, you probably told your friends about it.

The Psychology Behind Experiential Marketing

There are a few psychological phenomena that play into the powerful result of experiential marketing. After all, this tactic impacts most of your senses since it is immersive. That alone tells you the power it has over your mind and memory.  And if there’s one thing all marketers are after, it’s brain share and memory.  Marketers want their target market to remember their brand and have positive thoughts. Let’s explore more of the psychology invoked in experiential marketing.

Flashbulb memories are considered memories that are emotional and emblazoned in our minds forever. Examples of this are the memory of JFK’s assassination, the space shuttle challenger explosion, and 911.  Most people can tell you where they were when they heard the news; they can tell you what they were doing and how this news impacted them.  This is all due to how emotional the news was.  While the reports people will tell may be far from accurate, their passion and commitment to their story is unyielding and exactly the emotion marketers are yearning for. How can you create an emotional experience that’s emblazoned in your consumers’ mind?  Sometimes the Pepsi Challenge can do this – just ask me as 39 years later and I can envision the stand at Wild Rivers water park when I was 9 years old… and I picked Pepsi…the crowds cheered… and I was a part of it.

Experiential learning is a theory put forth by David Kolb in 1984.  Kolb identified that, “the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combination of grasping and transforming experience.”  This translates to mean that experiences create memories and we as humans love making memories as it includes our favorite person, “me.”  It also means that we learn by doing, which is the most effective method of training. This includes vestibule training and on-the-job training that have proven to be the most effective method of creating repeatable behaviors.  Now invoke your brand into this theory and you may just come up with your next genius experiential marketing campaign.

The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon is where you come across a specific item you have never heard of and then once you have, you suddenly see this item everywhere – or you hear it everywhere.  A common occurrence is when you decide to buy a new car you had not considered and as a result you suddenly see this car everywhere.  You are now part of a club you did not know existed.  This is another phenomenon you want to take advantage of. Your goal is to introduce a consumer in a holistic and emotional brand experience anticipating that they will start to notice your brand everywhere – in other people’s hands, homes, cars, on billboards, in stores, and more…hopefully in this new consumer’s shopping cart or online basket, so they too can be part of the club.

The Cool Factor and Word of Mouth Marketing is extremely powerful. These both leverage all psychology principles discussed and even more not referenced. Once you have had an immersive brand experience, like the Pepsi Challenge or attending a Red Bull Flugtag event, you sure are not keeping it a secret. Believe me that 39 years my family and friends know about my involvement and maybe even exaggeration as the flashbulb memories indicate – and no flugtag attendance ever went without social media pictures and massive brags for days.  “Dude, you should have been there” has been heard far and wide after these aerial stunts across the globe.  Again, how do you incorporate your brand into these cool factor and bragworthy experiential marketing opportunities? Get your juices flowing by attending a few yourself.

Experiential Marketing Campaigns that Delivered

  1.  Airbnb and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air:  This campaign included all the players, Airbnb, Will Smith, and the owner of the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” house joined forces for the show’s 30th anniversary. The real fresh prince sitcom house was decorated with Fresh Prince gear and made available for only $30 a night for a few nights.  This received more media attention than you would imagine during the pandemic and considered a wild success as media coverage costs nothing but delivers big impact with editorial coverage showing support beyond general word of mouth marketing as editors are considered authorities and influencers which now invokes the cool factor!
  2. JetBlue and the Ultimate Ice Breaker:  In an effort to find a clever way to promote their new direct flights from New York to Palm Springs, JetBlue placed a number of summer accessories inside a six-foot by six-foot ice block in the dead of winter in NYC.  The exhibit told New Yorkers that anything was up for grabs. People had to use whatever they had on their person to break into the ice to claim their prize. Prizes included summer accessories such as beach attire, golf clubs, and, of course, free tickets to Palm Springs.

This was an extremely successful experiential marketing event that produced phenomenal results for JetBlue as well as their partnership with the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau. A comprehensive social media campaign was executed in conjunction with the strategy and the result was great online buzz for JetBlue.

  3. Doc McStuffin’s check up:  This campaign took the popular Disney TV show, Doc McStuffin where a young girl heals her toys in her backyard check up room. Disney set out to take Doc McStuffin Check-up Clinics across the country to 20 different cities, enabling all youngsters to have the opportunity to heal a stuffed toy.  The opportunity was rolled out through Toy’s R Us, Tesco, and Smith’s stores. Each child was given the opportunity to do a 10-minute check up on the stuffed toy. While other children waited, they were given Doc McStuffin plush toys and coloring books to play with. Once the child did the check-up, they were provided with a Doc McStuffins certificate and given a free “Doc Is In The House” door hanger. This experiential marketing campaign resulted in a 5.3% increase in propensity to purchase, interacting with over 7,700 children in the process. 87% said they would recommend Doc McStuffin to other parents.

4. M&M’s Pop Up Flavor Explosion:  This was an interesting experiential marketing event as it was marketing a future product and getting consumer involvement up-front. And honestly, who doesn’t like being asked their opinion.  They are free and we all certainly have a lot of them to share!  M&M set up flavor rooms and invited passer byes to participate in voting on their favorite new M&M flavors to determine which flavors will make the cut and roll out to stores globally.  And imagine this, you attend the pop up experience and  tell your friends how Mars brand asked you for what you think about their future brands – pretty cool right? Now imagine you see the flavor you voted for in the store at the local convenience store or bodega and now you’re telling the clerk as you checked out that you personally helped Mars determine which brands would sell.  As a marketer you are hearing music to your ears – is it that easy? No, but with clever strategies it can deploy and reverberate just like that.

As y0ou can see experiential marketing is extremely powerful with some real strong hold in the foundation of psychology and how live events impact emotion and memory.  More research shows that this is not a type of marketing you can afford to ignore. While this may be difficult during the pandemic, there are definite pivots that can be made extremely successful with digital activations.

Over 65% of brands using experiential marketing say that it proves worthy with an uptick in sales as well as these additional benefits:

  • 80% of engagement participants report experiential marketing events have a significant impact on their purchasing decision. (EventTrack)
  • 70% of users adopt the brand in their regular consumption as a result of the experiential event. (EventTrack)
  • 75% of companies with experience budgets ranging from $50-100 million anticipate/forecast more than 5:1 ROI when executing experiential marketing events. (EMI & Mosaic)

Next step is to gather your creative team to drum up some uberly creative ideas to support world-class brand engagement.  There are also plenty of event production companies available to light a fire with creativity under your product or service.  Just remember the psychological principles in every tactic and you’re sure to get your consumers buzzing about how they helped you and it was so cool – Just like me, choose Pepsi!

Event Planning Checklist

If you have ever planned an event, you know how many moving parts are involved. Event planning requires exceptional organizational and prioritization skills, and even still, things are bound to fall through the cracks if you don’t have a systemized way to keep track of your progress.

Whether you choose online software or opt to go old-school “pen and paper”, you need to create a comprehensive event-planning checklist that outlines your planning process from start to finish, from your event date to your marketing plan to your post-event follow-up tasks.

Here’s an Event Planning Checklist to get you started, including the most important details to consider as well as a timeline to guide the process.

Pandemic Event Production: Beat the Odds with this Guide

The pandemic has uprooted virtually every aspect of the event industry, taking event professionals from adjusting to mastering the new technologies and techniques involved in organizing events in the rapidly evolving digital world. But master they did! Here are the top proven event production strategies for beating the odds in a virtual world of opportunities.

Assess & Adapt as Needed

One thing is certain, innovation and agility are the two defining characteristics that have saved companies over the past year.

Brands that succeeded in anticipating their customers’ needs and realigning their strategies accordingly have accomplished more than mere survival, they have diversified their offerings, streamlined technology and workflow, and strengthened rapport with customers and business affiliates.

Pride Products is a shining example of one such pandemic pivot. The promotional and corporate gift company already had strong relationships with over 80 corporate recruiting and HR departments. So when sales started to plummet, they reached out to their clients and discovered there was an overwhelming need for team-building support during the extended period of forced isolation. Thus, ConnectRCentral was born- a new business providing customized, virtual team-building activities.

Master the Digital Landscape

Event production has clearly seen better days. At the same time, the event industry is also being transformed in ways we would have never imagined a few short years ago. Streaming technologies, virtual event platforms, cloud software, and countless other digital solutions have reinvented the way we connect and communicate with customers and colleagues.

However, to stay relevant and successful in this virtual landscape, businesses need to invest in these new technologies, whether that means implementing a new software solution or simply automating existing processes to optimize internal workflows as well as streamline communication channels.

Brands also need to harness their know-how in digital marketing, staying on top of the latest trends in social media and content creation to strategically and effectively reach and expand their target audience.

Embrace Hybrid as the New Normal

Virtual meetings have been vital throughout the pandemic. But the future of events is definitely going to be a hybrid event production model. Hybrid is the solution to the new normal, allowing audiences to choose whether they attend in-person or virtually, blending a smaller live event experience with a large-scale, live-streamed virtual experience, access to an unlimited number of virtual attendees.

To successfully engage with audiences in the ever-evolving new normal, event organizers need to reimagine live events into virtual and hybrid experiences, adopting the best techniques, platforms, and cutting-edge technologies to engage audiences and accelerate business and marketing wins again and again.

Dial-in Your Data

Data monitoring tools are pretty much part and parcel of most virtual event platforms and associated technologies. Brands can track and analyze everything from registration to level of audience engagement to how long attendees viewed a presentation.

But if your team isn’t up to speed on how to track data, you won’t be able to leverage your findings to improve your events and maximize the user experience. Incorporate your data collection process into your event planning strategy to ensure the valuable insights you receive translate into improved performance, increased engagement, and an optimal ROI.

Leave it to the Professionals

Virtual and hybrid events might seem like they require less effort and nuance than live events. But a well-designed, well-run virtual meeting requires an equal amount of preparation and expertise as an in-person event. There is an art to moderating online sessions and keeping guests actively participating and entertaining. And how do you best strategize breakout sessions, organize networking activities, and handle meals? If you are leading a meeting, do you know how to seamlessly change screens, put up graphics, cue speakers, etc. well enough to still focus on your content?

Trained virtual event planning services will not only take a huge amount of pressure off you and your team, but they can also contribute their extensive knowledge and broad skill set to help you deliver a top-quality event utilizing the latest trends and technologies.

Full-Proof Your Crisis Management Strategy

After more than a year of being tossed around by unprecedented change and uncertainty, brands have had to reinvent their approach, adopting radically different protocols and procedures to event planning and implementation.

As obvious as it seems, many business owners still don’t have official crisis management plans in place. Company leadership needs to implement an up-to-date strategy that reflects the latest prevention and safety guidelines related to crisis communication, emergency preparedness, and virtual meeting and event management.

The event production industry is forever changed, and there is no looking back. But why would you? Instead, focus on all the new opportunities and technologies that have surfaced, following in the footsteps of so many impressive brands who have used the above strategies to rewrite history…all the way to the top.

From Practical to Tactical Webinar Tips: Ring in the Sales

Practical & Tactical Webinar Tips: How to bring the crowds in

Webinars are the new black in 2020. B2C and B2B are killing it alike with raving fan-like attendance. People are consuming content at incredible rates while sheltering in place.  There is something to be said about the mind needing distractions whether its learning or entertainment or a combination…which is what you want to aim for.

Producing a webinar is not the most difficult task, but it’s also not a simplistic task; there are many moving pieces to ensure you webinar goes smoothly.  We’ve listed both practical and tactical tips below:

  1. Choosing your webinar platform may be the most daunting of them all. There are so many options and somehow Zoom has become a household name.  Microsoft teams, Webex (trusty old faithful), WebinarNinja, GotoWebinar, Jet Webinar, LiveStream, and a host of others we don’t need to bore you with.

There are important considerations for these platforms that you need to evaluate.  Will you need breakout rooms with facilitators?  Will you have bi-directional speaking or single direction from host to guests?  These all matter, but we’re going to presume if you are reading this that you are just starting out and will have a one-way communication and no breakout rooms.

Most of the platforms can support all of these options…it’s just figuring out how to use them, what plan level you want to pay for, and how intuitive they are to you.  You can check out complete ease of use rankings at G2 Crowd Source , the yelp of business software, where users like yourself review professional business software.

Pricing on these platforms are typically in the sub $100 range per month when you use their lowest paid subscription model. This level typically supports 100 webinar audience members with the ability to host as many webinars a month as you want.  You can even replay a webinar to a new audience.

  1. Once you select your platform, you will want to build your presentation. You want to not only talk to your audience but it’s best as in all marketing to provide valuable content to your audience at no cost. This give works well to receive a get from your audience.

Make sure you keep your webinar to under an hour with your presentation.  Be sure to include visuals, surprise information, and humor always helps.  If you are looking for ideas on presentations, you may want to look at the thousands of presentations hosted on  SlideShare by LinkedIn.  This will get your creative juices flowing and get you off to a good start.

Be sure your branding is on key by utilizing a professional graphic designer. Colors and imagery are extremely powerful, so in absence of being in front of your client, use your tools wisely. Be sure to show examples of what you are sharing. The following tactics are recommended for your presentation to engage, entertain, and inform your audience.

Invite a guest speaker or panelist that is well known or offers a role of respect in the industry. The head of automotive design or scientist in your field will lend a lot of credibility to your presentation. This also makes the presentation a lot more engaging and conversational.

Infographics are extremely popular. You can share one in your presentation and ask for a raise of hands (virtual of course) to who would like to receive this infographic. Remember, getting buy in on small things is where it starts. This will be your 3rd engagement in the webinar funnel.

Hold pop quiz contests in your webinar to keep people alert, break up the presentation and award a valuable and relevant prize. You may want to offer a 90-day free trial to your service or offer a tour of your facility with travel included. You may want to offer random rewards to keep folks on the line through the whole presentation.

Ask your audience questions that they can answer in the chat box. For example, how many folks out there are frustrated by the lack of ability to do (x) and of course your product or service solves this problem. Another form of buy in.

Shout out to the folks there – Hey Lisa, hey Mike, hey Michelle…great to see you all out there. Mind you, you only want to see their names and not camera…privacy issues still exist, so this will be a setting you set up beforehand.

Offer low prices, limited time offers that are 10X in value with a low buy in to get to the next level of your relationship. (e.g. When you buy within the next hour, you will get all of these benefits worth 10X what you charge)

At the close of your webinar thank your audience and invite them to the next level of engagement, a personal meeting. You may do this by offering a free consultation, 30 minutes free support, or offering straight up cash for the meeting….yes this works. Sharpspring was offering $200 in catered lunches to get 1 hour of your team’s time to share their platform.  While we don’t have success numbers on this, we did have lunch!

  1. Inviting your audience to your webinar. This is a very key part to your webinar…who wants to present to an audience of 2? That’s more like a meeting than an event. So let’s fill those 100 seats as efficiently as possible.  Let’s start with your house file of existing customers and prospects in your CRM. If you don’t have a CRM, (we can talk later about that) then we’re referencing all the emails you may have on file or any customer information you have.

If you have 100s of business cards in a drawer, now would be the time to buy one of those card scanners or hire your niece to enter the data.  This data will be used a couple of ways; first you will design an email blast inviting your audience to your event.  Remember copywriting matters. Sell the benefit of the information, the offer to win while attending, and surprise ending that you must show up to see. Use colorful imagery with why this information is so important and how people of stature in your industry have contributed to this data and find your information valuable as well. Share valuable guest speaker information and most importantly share the when and the link to register. You may want to offer an incentive to the 1st 25 people to register to instill a sense of urgency.

Now you blast off your invitation and wait for the replies to come in while you are simultaneously building your Facebook and LinkedIn ads. Here is another place you will want to upload everything you know about your customer. Once you do this, you can target lookalike audiences and start building your funnel of new prospects. Data in itself is valuable to continue email marketing with drip campaigns.  Again, you want to test your copy with a couple different ads as well as test your imagery with 2 more ads, and test your call to action with a couple more ads. You will start to see what is resonating with your audience and this will get easier with each new webinar ad campaign.

  1. Getting your audience to attend is key! This is a large effort and why we encourage incentives and reminders. Be sure to turn on your webinar reminders inside the platform you choose. Typically, you can set it for 1 week, 1 day, and 1 hour before the webinar.  You may also want a countdown clock.  In this reminder, continue to sell why the prospect or client will benefit from attending. Reinforce your benefits and whys.
  2. On the day of the webinar, you’ll probably have jitters and excitement just like a live event. Don’t worry, this is all natural with new technology and new ways of doing things.  People have come to appreciate authenticity and are very forgiving when you share your excitement and jitters as well as genuine insecurity over a new platform.  Most people are new to this, so they will have compassion for your plight and be more open to you.  Almost every webinar we have hosted gets accolades at the end with thank yous and great job, excellent information, can I get a call back, and even sales. Use this new experience to your advantage and you will be happy with how folks on the other end respond.

And while it may be uncomfortable, turn your camera on.  People want to know who you are and most of all today, they really want to connect. We are all human and looking to engage and learn. Seeing your face shows your enthusiasm and shows you are human just like them.  You can change your visual layout to make the camera image smaller while the larger image is of the presentation.  Though we do recommend starting and ending with you in full screen mode. This is another way of being genuine and not needing anything but you to welcome your very important guests that have carved out an hour of their day for you and saying thank you just the same at the end.

We wish you the best in producing your first webinar. You will learn that these are not only affordable lead gen tools, engagement tools, and funnel helpers, but fun too!  If you are looking to host a contest during your webinar, let us know, we have some great instant win games that you can send out in the chat box and enable X number of guests to win during each webinar.  You can email us at engage@contestfactory.com or give us a ring at 855-744-6966.

Happy Selling!

Learn the top 5 benefits of taking your live conferences and events virtual from successful industry leaders who are paving the way to the new era of “networking in place.”

Go Global

Location, cost, conflicting schedules, and unanticipated circumstances can make in-person conferences impossible for many conference-goers. But with virtual events, the potential in terms of reach and participation is unlimited.

Thomson Reuters, for example, saw a 73% increase in global attendees when it took its live event digital. And Salesforce’s World Tour Sydney virtual event was viewed by a staggering 1.2 million people!

Virtual events also have a better chance of attracting high-demand speakers who might not have the time to travel to a live conference but are happy to record a quick video or participate in a live virtual discussion.

Money travels further in Place

Think of all the costs involved in planning a major public event- renting the venue, catering, security, speaker fees, just to name a few. And for attendees, travel costs alone can prevent many smaller businesses from participating.

Taking your event online eliminates almost all of the major expenses and makes your event accessible to a vastly larger audience that could literally span across the globe.

Connecting for Real

Many business owners and marketers attend conferences and summits as part of their growth strategy and pipeline goals, utilizing impromptu gatherings and happy hours to network. But virtual events or webinars can be just as effective for networking.

Gong used their virtual conference, #Celebrate Online to bring together professionals from name-brand companies to teach attendees top sales tactics and techniques. The event featured live networking sessions and a virtual expo area where sponsors set up virtual booths that attendees could “visit” and interact with a real company representative and talk with them about their offerings via video conferencing. The end result was a virtual expo that was as beneficial and effective as its previous live events.

Benefits that Last

Unlike one-off live events, virtual conferences allow you to record packaged content for future sales and lead generation — something that can also be used to generate passive income.

Webinar expert, Jon Schumacher, launched a Webinar Mastery Summit virtual conference, offering an All-Access Pass for lifetime access to 17 expert video sessions, full recordings of all sessions, three months subscription to software, and access to a private networking community. He also generated 7,000 new email subscribers and over $55,000 in revenue from All-Access Pass sales.

Virtual Show & Tell

Featuring sponsors, partners, and product demos through creative games and contests is a fun way to engage your audience and keep them coming back for more.

Salesforce’s World Tour Sydney event created an AppExchange competition between exhibitors. Competitors were given three minutes to present their apps that participants could vote for using a dedicated link. Salesforce used their social media platforms to announce the winners on the days following the event.

Instant access to best practices

Because all hands on deck are online, event organizers and attendees are more likely to post about their experiences, both good and bad, providing free, easily accessible education and resources for those planning their first online event or looking to improve their next one.

The COVID pandemic did away with business as usual, but that doesn’t mean businesses have to do away with their annual events. We have only scratched the surface of how technology can be used to build our brands, expand our reach, and elevate our products and services. Now is the time to watch and learn, so when the dust finally settles, your company will still be standing…whether it be 6 feet or 10,000 miles apart.

It’s Showtime: The Top 7 Benefits of Trade Shows

Benefits of Trade shows are almost limitless in the B2B market, lets focus, though and show you the gold.

For years, trade shows were a staple in almost every company’s budget. Trade shows were the event to showcase new products, technologies, see the competition, and meet with top clients and prospects. There was a time when every salesperson was eager to attend and meet with the decision makers from their top accounts and sign orders. But over the years, exhibiting has become so expensive that many large companies have pulled out of national events and opted for smaller, more intimate types of trade shows.

Some people feel that digital marketing is replacing trade shows, and in time, trade shows could become a relic of the past. But for now, we believe the benefits of exhibiting and attending trade shows are still very much alive. According to Company 119, the average cost of meeting with a client at a trade show in 2018 was $142. The average cost of meeting at the client’s office was $259. Not only is the actual face-to-face cost lower at trade shows, 77% of executive decision makers found at least one new supplier at trade shows.

What are the best reasons for your brand to exhibit at a trade show? Here’s our top 7 list:

#1.  Sales and Lead Opportunities

  • Research those shows that are highly relevant to your industry to acquire qualified leads and interested attendees.
  • Invest in a badge scanner to capture and simplify leads.
  • Offer trade show pricing.

#2.  Face-to-Face Meetings

  • Despite technological advancements, engaging with people face-to-face is beneficial and shows that your company is taking proactive interest in their customers.
  • Close sales in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Meeting with customers and prospects tends to strengthen brand loyalty.
  • Create lasting business relationships with clients, vendors and industry professionals.

#3.  Brand Visibility and Awareness

  • Increases exposure and connect to your customer on a personal level.
  • If your budget cannot accommodate a large booth space, a smaller 10’ x 10’ exhibit can have the same impact as the larger, more expensive version.
    • Use smart designs and graphics.
    • Attention-grabbing kiosks/counters.
    • Well-designed product displays.

#4.  Research Your Industry and Competition

  • Know the industry news, research, and product development.
  • Attend the seminars and presentations.

#5.  Build Lasting Relationships Within Your Industry

  • Trade shows are the ultimate networking opportunity. Take the opportunity to walk around and meet your booth neighbors.

#6.  Showcase New Products & Services

  • Exhibits that incorporate creative product display solutions help set the stage to build face-to-face connections.
  •  Allowing customers to experience the new product firsthand increases interest and drives sales, even after the show has ended.

#7.  Listen to Your Customer Feedback

  • Trade shows allow for real-time feedback on your products, services, and the company.
  • Listen to current customers and prospects to understand their needs and insights.

Exhibiting or attending trade shows should be like any marketing activity. You must have a strategy as to why to attend or exhibit. Take the following steps when considering your next trade show opportunity:

  • Define your goals.
  • Identify your audience.
  • Research and vet the right type of trade show for your industry.
  • Define strategy to reach goal.

After outlining your intent to attend or exhibit at a trade show, your company should be able to make a good business decision. With this preparation, your trade show experience will be able to convert leads into opportunities, which in turn drive revenue and obtain or retain loyal customers.
